Kirkgate Holdings was originally established in 1994 as a subsidiary of Grampian Housing Association to extend the range of affordable housing options available to customers, including homes for sales and market rent.

In 2005, following a change in the Rules, Kirkgate Homes was renamed Kirkgate Holdings. The change in the Rules means that Kirkgate Holdings is now able to undertake non-housing devlopments including, for example, the development of health centres and office accommodation.

Kirkgate Holdings is registered with the Financial Services Authority under the Industrial and Provident Societies Act 1965 and the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000. It is also a member of the Scottish Federation of Housing Associations.
